In so many ways, solutions to America's health care woes defy the best intentions of community leaders. The problem is complex; solutions are costly.

But there is one health care solution that isn't complicated, nor beyond our financial reach. With hometown support, the Sonoma County Children's Health Initiative can help thousands of local kids -- and save money in the long run.

The United Way last week became the latest local agency to contribute to the initiative that aims to provide health care to 8,000 local kids. United Way will donate $50,000 a year for the next five years.

For $75, the program can sign-up one of 5,300 hometown children who are eligible for the state's Medi-Cal or Healthy Families programs. For $1,200, it can buy health insurance for one of 2,700 kids who aren't eligible for state support.

This solution combines humanity and practicality. By the time a sick child without insurance arrives at a local emergency room, the cost of care will exceed the cost of the Children's Health Initiative many times over. For information, call Healthy Kids Sonoma County at 565-4419.
